The New York Daily News has blasted President Trump for causing the partial government shutdown, depicting Trump as Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch on its cover amid the tagline “How the Trump Stole Christmas!”. Last week Trump had said, in front of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and all the press he himself had brought into a meeting that was supposed to be private, so in front of the whole world in other words, that he would accept the responsibility if there was a shutdown over his wall funding, or lack thereof, and he said he would not blame Democrats for it. Of course Trump has again gone back on his word and is already blaming Democrats for the partial shutdown that began after no deal was reached last night.

Trump also reneged on being willing to sign stopgap spending provisions that did not include wall funding, a willingness that the White House has expressed in several ways this week. A temporary funding deal that did not include wall funding went through the Senate successfully and would very likely have gone through the House successfully, so if Trump had kept his word on this second point, a shutdown could have been avoided. But Trump didn’t keep his word on this, either, after far right conservatives took to Trump’s favorite place to stare, Fox News, and said that Trump shouldn’t back down on getting funding for his wall, with some even saying they wouldn’t vote for him again if he didn’t stand his ground on it. So Trump appeared to listen to those diatribes, rather than listening to reason, and we have the partial shutdown as a result, with some 800,000 government employees due to lose their incomes while the government persists in this state of stalemate.

And so it is that the New York Daily News for today’s edition depicted Trump as The Grinch, tweeting this image of today’s cover last night and writing, in the form of Dr. Seuss, “It could be (his) head wasn’t screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. But we think that the most likely reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”

To be clear, Congress has shown it is willing and able to make a deal on at least a stopgap spending bill that would keep the government fully running into February, but there is no point to such a deal if Trump vetoes it for not having funding for his folly of a border wall, since it is unlikely there would be enough votes to override his veto. Hence the stalemate, where Trump does not have the votes he would need to get funding for his border wall passed by both houses of Congress, but insists on having that funding included before he will sign the remaining appropriations bills. According to The Huffington Post:

The New York Daily News used its Saturday cover to tear into President Donald Trump over the government shutdown. For its latest blistering front page, the tabloid depicted Trump as Dr. Seuss’ fictional character The Grinch. The headline reads: “How The Trump Stole Christmas!” Trump’s hometown newspaper also included verses from Seuss’ children’s book “How The Grinch Stole Christmas!” in its Twitter caption. Its cover story called the shutdown, which began late Friday after Trump refused to sign a new spending bill that didn’t including money for his U.S.-Mexico border wall, “a Christmas tragedy.” It “complicates the lives” of federal workers over the holidays, it added.

It remains to be seen what will happen with this shutdown. It seems unlikely that Democrats will bend to giving Trump wall funding and Trump has boxed himself into a corner by demanding the funding. Unless Trump backs down, a deal seems unlikely. Then in January Trump’s position will be further weakened by the Democrats regaining the majority in the House.
