“Fox and Friends” host Brian Kilmeade today got widely condemned after he compared the conditions at immigrant detention centers to a house party. Kilmeade also put the blame for the conditions on the number of immigrants, rather than the facilities, and used the term “overstocked” instead of “overcrowded”, as if the detainees weren’t people, saying, according to The Hill, “you can have the best facilities in the world but they are so overstocked.” Kilmeade and his cohorts were attempting to defend the Trump administration against widespread allegations of poor conditions at immigrant detention centers.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took particular issue with Kilmeade comparing the conditions at immigrant detention center to a house party of 100 people at a house with 2 and a half bathrooms. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Hey, @kilmeade: What was the last ‘party’ you went to where you: – Were locked in a cage under armed guard – Drank out of a toilet – & given food of such poor nutritional value, for so long, that it gave you mouth sores?”, including video of Kilmeade’s comments. Ocasio-Cortez got thousands of likes from people agreeing with her condemnation of Kilmeade’s comments.
Ocasio-Cortez was among a delegation of Democratic lawmakers who yesterday toured several immigrant detention facilities in Texas, so she has first-hand experience of those facilities, and therefore likely knows whereof she speaks in her comments to Kilmeade. Ocasio-Cortez described alarming conditions in some cases and also said that one “humane” shelter she saw was not even half full, while other facilities are greatly overcrowded. According to The Hill:
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed “Fox and Friends” host Brian Kilmeade for comparing conditions at migrant detention facilities to a crowded house party. Kilmeade suggested Tuesday morning that conditions at migrant detention centers, which Ocasio-Cortez and other congress members toured Monday, were similar to a party with 100 people at a house with 2 1/2 baths. …The freshman representative tweeted throughout Monday as she toured U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) detention centers in Texas, describing unsanitary conditions and mistreatment of migrants. …She also said that officers treated detainees with “toxic” behavior, which cuts nothing from costs. House Democrats described the border facilities as crowding women into small concrete cells with no water, and said detainees were told to drink out of toilets. They said migrants weren’t given access to showers or proper meals. …Ahead of the congressional tour of the facilities, ProPublica uncovered a Facebook group of Border Patrol agents filled with derogatory posts targeting migrants and lawmakers, including Ocasio-Cortez.
Another House Democrat who toured immigrant detention facilities yesterday was Represetative Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who tweeted photos and video of some of what he saw, also saying, according to The Hill, “Our border patrol system is broken. And part of the reason it stays broken is because it’s kept secret. The American people must see what is being carried out in their name.”
